Hudson River Fish Consumption Advisories Due to PCBs

The Hudson River Natural Resource Trustees released an updated injury determination report on Hudson River fish consumption advisories due to PCBs. The current report confirms that the public’s use of the fishery in the 200 mile Hudson River Superfund Site, whether for a livelihood, a source of recreational enjoyment, or for nutrition, has been and continues to be severely curtailed as a result of the closures and health advisories detailed in this report. The Trustees conclude that this constitutes an injury to this natural resource. While dredging of the upper Hudson River is scheduled to finish in 2015, hundreds of acres of PCB-contaminated sediments will remain unremediated in the upper river and their presence will slow the reduction of PCBs in fish and recovery of the ecosystem. For 19 years, fishing was banned in this approximate 40 mile reach of the river, and possession of any fish (other than herring, for bait) in this reach remains prohibited. The “don’t eat” (or eat none) advisory applicable to all species between Hudson Falls and the Federal Dam in Troy, NY has been in place for nearly 40 years. (NOAA)
