OR&R Participates in 2017 Alaska Marine Science Symposium

FEBRUARY 3, 2017--From Jan 24-28, four OR&R scientists participated in the 2017 Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage, joining over 700 scientists and students from Alaska and around the U.S.

OR&R scientists were authors or co-authors of two platform presentations and several posters. This symposium was unique because all papers were presented in one plenary session (no split sessions), so that hundreds could all hear all presentations.

Each day was devoted to one of Alaska's three seas: the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Presentations covered physical oceanography and climate change, ocean acidification, marine debris, ecosystem perspectives, and new discoveries about the biology of plankton, infauna, fish, birds, and mammals.

Highlighted were: reviews of impacts of the recent 3-year North Pacific ocean "heat wave," 25 years of Exxon Valdez oil spill experience, new tools for studying and monitoring Alaska's marine waters and resources at risk, newly discovered ecosystem connections, sensitivity of cold water organisms to oil, human/resource connections, new remote sensing applications, and many other subjects of direct relevance to response and restoration in Alaska seas.

OR&R’s Emergency Response Division work and products were highlighted by a number of academic speakers. OR&R scientists also engaged in separate discussions with Alaskan colleagues on current and planned research and development activities.
