Building Readiness for Oil Spill Response

MARCH 24, 2017--The NOAA Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center will be providing a Science of Oil Spills class on March 27-31 in Mobile, AL.

Students from six federal agencies, several state agencies, local municipalities, and industry will attend. The instructors and students come from across the country for this training.

The Science of Oil Spills class provides training focused at the mid-level experience range for emergency responders and resource managers to advance their understanding of oil spill science when analyzing spills and making risk-based decisions during response activities. Training topics include: fate and behavior of oil spilled in the environment; oil chemistry and toxicity, response options for open water and shoreline clean up to include cleanup endpoints; principles of ecological risk assessment, and an introduction to damage assessment techniques. To reinforce the classroom lectures and exercise, the students will participate in field activities to learn beach transport processes, sensitive ecosystems risks, and shoreline protection and cleanup strategies at Dauphin Island, AL.

This Science of Oil Spills class is held annually and is organized jointly by OR&R’s Emergency Response Division and the Disaster Response Center.
