Career Day at Seattle’s Greenwood Library

MARCH 4, 2016--LTJG Rachel Pryor attended a Professional Career Day at the Seattle Greenwood Library in Seattle to talk to elementary students from MMSC Day School, a Seattle Jewish school, about careers at NOAA.

The students were prepared with questions including, “What is your typical day at the office like? What do you enjoy most about your job? What skills do you need to perform your job well?” They were given instructions to introduce themselves, take notes, and then later were to conduct a mock job interview.

Rachel shared about her profession by discussing what it is like to drive NOAA research vessels as a NOAA Corps officer and conducting stock assessment surveys of ground fish and sharks in the Gulf of Mexico. As a Regional Response Officer, she spoke about the role of the OR&R Emergency Response Division when responding to oil spills and talked to students about different type of oils using the Oil Spill Kit which contains crude and refined oil samples. Lastly, students were shown trash collected from beach clean ups hosted by the Marine Debris Program, including a giant jar of cigarette butts collected within one mile of shoreline.

Other professionals included a local fireman, a civil engineer, a social worker, a rabbi, and a restaurant owner. The students were thrilled to receive Marine Debris work books and the teachers from the MMSC Day School were very appreciative to have NOAA represented at the Career Fair!
