Crude Oil Transportation Seminar to Address Risk of Spills in the Great Lakes

JUNE 9, 2017--On June 8 and 9, OR&R Emergency Response Division staff Doug Helton and Michael Doig participated in a crude oil transportation seminar in Cleveland, OH.

The seminar was sponsored by NOAA Sea Grant, the Great Lakes Commission, and the International Joint Commission, and brought together U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, state and provincial agencies, academic researchers, NGOs, industry, and tribal stakeholders to discuss the risk of spills in the Great Lakes. The topics covered included the existing and proposed oil transportation networks and modes, economic issues, response challenges, and lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon and Kalamazoo River oil spills. The trans-boundary and international aspects of transportation of oil in the region were also discussed.
