Hazardous Waste Operator Training for Washington Coast Tribes

MAY 29, 2015--OR&R’s Emergency Response Division collaborated with USCG District 13, the Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC), and Washington Department of Ecology to provide 8-Hour Hazardous Waste Operator ("HAZWOPER") refresher training to Washington Coast Tribes from May 19 – 22, 2015.

Trained tribal members can serve as spill responders for MSRC or other spill response organizations in the event of an oil spill along the Washington Coast, which could affect tribal lands and Usual and Accustomed Fishing Areas. The refresher training was held in Neah Bay for the Makah Tribe, La Push for the Quillayute Tribe, and Taholah for the Quinault Tribe.

The course is designed to provide informative classroom presentations and hands-on experience with safety gear and spill response equipment. Classroom topics included oil chemistry, NOAA response tools, Incident Command System, Geographic Response Plan descriptions and uses, and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
