Marine Debris Program at Africa Marine Waste Conference

JULY 21, 2017--NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) staff had the opportunity to present at the recent Africa Marine Waste Conference, held July 10 – 13 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

This conference brought together the marine debris community across Africa, including National and local government, NGO’s, industry, as well as a diverse set of international partners to share information and ways forward for the issue of marine debris in Africa ranging across research, removal and prevention. The MDP Alaska Regional Coordinator, Peter Murphy, provided a keynote presentation and facilitated a collaborative workshop focused on successes and opportunities and action in debris education. Over the course of the four days of the conference, invaluable information was presented and shared that will inform the development and management of the Africa Marine Waste Network (AMWN), a tool and forum for sharing of successes, techniques and lessons learned focused specifically on the marine debris work in Africa. The MDP will be continuing to engage with the AMWN and partners to support the ongoing development and management of this network. For additional information, please contact: Peter.Murphy@noaa.gov.
