Marine Debris Program and the Citizen Science Association

The Marine Debris Program staff participated in the inaugural conference of the Citizen Science Association in San Jose, CA, on February 11-12, 2015.

The conference provided an opportunity for citizen science researchers, educators, and practitioners to discuss best practices, approaches, and new technologies for addressing environmental issues through public participation in data collection. Sherry Lippiatt prepared a poster and shared information on the Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project (MD-MAP), a nationwide, largely volunteer-led shoreline monitoring program. The MD-MAP, an initiative that has involved nearly 50 partner organizations to date, was developed to measure baseline debris loads and assess the effectiveness of prevention efforts.

For more information on the conference or on MD-MAP, contact Sherry.Lippiatt@noaa.gov.
