Marine Debris Program at the Citizen Science Association Conference

MAY 26, 2017--Staff from the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) attended the Citizen Science Association (CSA) Conference in Saint Paul, MN on May 17 – 20.

This conference brought together citizen science programs throughout the world to discuss their projects, new and innovative tools and apps to engage citizen scientists. Additionally, there were conversations directed towards best management practices and lessons learned while running citizen science programs.
The MDP hosted two tabling events during the conference, including at the citizen science festival at the Science Museum of Minnesota and at the CSA conference closing reception, “A Night in the Cloud”. Two of the MDP marine debris citizen science efforts, the NOAA Marine Debris Monitoring and Assessment Project and the Marine Debris Tracker app, were highlighted at these events. People of all ages engaged in marine debris conversations on how they can become involved in MDP citizen science programs as well as things that they can do to reduce the amount of marine debris entering our rivers, lakes, and oceans.
