Marine Debris Program Participates in Shoreline Survey Technique Comparison

JUNE 5, 2015--On May 28, 2015, the Marine Debris Program staff traveled to Hobuck Beach on the Olympic Peninsula with the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS) to do a field comparison of the NOAA and COASST shoreline marine debris surveys.

Although the COASST approach focuses on debris characteristics and potential harm to wildlife while the NOAA technique was designed to identify debris item types and concentrations, the two datasets can be combined for future assessments.
