Marine Debris Program Staff Participates in Channel Islands Beach Cleanup

APRIL 14, 2017--On April 7, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary coordinated a beach cleanup at Chinese Harbor on Santa Cruz Island.

The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) California Regional Coordinator, Sherry Lippiatt, joined the cleanup along with MDP grantees from California State University Channel Islands, the National Park Service, and local lobster fishermen. Much of the island coastlines have been off limits this year due to winter rains washing out access roads, so the cleanup crew accessed the site by sea using the S/V Shearwater. Debris removed included lobster traps, buoys, miscellaneous plastic debris, balloons, and numerous tennis balls.
