Marine Debris at the Washington Middle School STEM Career Fair

FEBRUARY 17, 2017--NOAA was out in full force at Washington Middle School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Career Fair on February 10 in Seattle, WA.

The Society of American Military Engineers organizes this yearly event to connect young students to STEM professionals and encourage their engagement with the field. OR&R was represented by the NOAA Marine Debris Program, which interacted with students throughout the day. From the Marine Debris Program’s informative handouts, to the Small Boat Program’s seafloor mapping activity and the National Marine Fisheries Service’ local species statues, the NOAA team offered enriching stimulation to hundreds of eager attendees.

Students had a worksheet to complete about each STEM professionals’ background, and some offered thoughtful follow-up along the way. Do you like fish? What will the ocean look like in thirty years if we don’t stop marine debris? What can I do to help clean up the ocean? If these students’ energetic questioning is any indication, the spirit of scientific inquiry is alive and well at Washington Middle School.
