National Ocean Science Bowl Regional Competition at MIT

MARCH 10, 2017-- Ken Finkelstein participated in the National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) regional competition at MIT in Cambridge, MA on March 4.

Ken has contributed to this effort for 14 years as a team coach for ten years and moderator for the last several years. NOSB is a NOAA-supported event that tests area high school students in the marine sciences through a lockout buzzer system pitting two schools with four participants each. Toss-up, Bonus and Team Challenge questions are used to find the winner through a sectional round-robin competition followed by a seeded single elimination tournament. Ken was a moderator throughout the day, quickly deciding if answers are correct or not. This year the winner of each regional NOSB tournament goes on to Oregon State University for the finals to crown the national champion. Ken encourages NOAA staff to participate in their local area tournament, as it is a very rewarding experience.
