New Website for Edmonds Marsh, Site of Seattle Science of Oil Spills Training

APRIL 14, 2017--The website focuses on the history of the marsh, the impact of filling and development (via historical map overlays), a bit about wildlife, and the recent activities of local citizens (Save Our Marsh, SOM).

During the fall and winter SOM successfully worked with the City of Edmonds to establish explicit buffer zones, in a revised Shoreline Management Plan. During citizen and city council meetings OR&R’s Alan Mearns provided science support largely through key literature sources.

During the summer Science of Oil Spills class field trips OR&R biologists help participants walk through marsh protection, assessment and response strategies. Notably, coal and oil trains pass along the western edge of the marsh every few hours providing a sense of risk.

For further information, contact Alan.Mearns@noaa.gov.
