NOAA Leads at Hanford Workshop Focused on Streamlined Assessment and Restoration

On June 10-12, 2014, several NOAA presenters spoke about Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) and successful approaches to integrate injury assessment and early restoration actions at contaminated sites.

NOAA is one of eight entities participating on the Hanford Natural Resource Trustee Council. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation is located in eastern Washington State, and encompasses more than 500 square miles of land, an immense site. For more than 30 years, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy produced tons of plutonium at Hanford to support World War II and Cold War efforts well into the 1970’s. The nine large nuclear reactors were located along 50 miles of the Columbia River and contamination injured salmon and other aquatic resources.
