NOAA Pacific Region Education Showcase

Recently, the OR&R Marine Debris Program (MDP) participated in a One NOAA Pacific Region Education Showcase organized by the Pacific Services Center in Hawaii.

One hundred educators from across the state attended the event at the NOAA Inouye Regional Center on Ford Island to learn, experience, and discover all the educational resources NOAA has to offer. In collaboration with Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, MDP hosted a session that provided lessons for elementary school educators participated in hands-on activities such as “All Tangled Up” featured in the program’s educational curriculum, “Turning the Tide on Trash.” Additionally, educators learned about the life cycle of an albatross, and dissected Laysan albatross boluses filled with plastics and fishing line.

Education is the first step toward lasting and effective solutions. Marine debris is an issue that will require attention for generations and educating our future decision-makers will help to ensure the welfare of our ocean and personal well-being.
