NOAA Participates in Crude-By-Rail Panel

MAY 8, 2015--On April 30, 2015, Scientific Support Coordinator Ed Levine was part of a panel discussion concerning crude oil transportation on railways.

The focus of the presentations was on current safety issues and potential risks of a derailment oil spill. Other presenters included the fire chief from Easton, Pennsylvania, and a railway economist. NOAA's presentation looked at the history and uses of oil, general properties of oil and Bakken in particular, and consequences of oil spills in general.

The venue for the event was the Nurture Nature Center (NNC) in Easton, PA. The Center is a dynamic location for community learning about local environmental risks. NNC is housed in a beautifully renovated, historic, 30,000 square foot facility, where the staff uses a blend of science, art, and dialogue programs to invite the local residents and decision-makers into an ongoing dialogue about building community resiliency through environmentally sound decision-making.

The attendees were mostly local citizens, including a candidate for mayor of Philadelphia. The presentation was well-received.
