NOAA Roundtable for Massachusetts Congressional Staffers

JULY 15, 2016--Ken Finkelstein of OR&R’s Assessment and Restoration Division attended the NOAA Roundtable for Massachusetts Congressional Staffers at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

The theme of the meeting was Coastal Community Resilience. Speakers came from most of the NOAA services including the National Ocean Service, and also included the Massachusetts State Department of Environmental Protection. Staffers from the Massachusetts State Senate and House of Representatives were in attendance. Much of the discussion concerned sea-level change and the challenge of keeping carbon sequestered in the ocean, estuaries, salt marshes, and sea grasses, (also known as blue carbon, which is the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems). Also participating in the meeting, NOAA Weather Service predicted more but less frequent rainfall in Massachusetts likely resulting in future numerous heavy downpours throughout the state. Warming weather may also result in increased coastal flooding from both the melting glaciers and thermal expansion of the ocean along with these severe storm events.
