NOAA Staff Participate in PREP Oil Spill Drill in Michigan

JUNE 2, 2016 -- Staff from NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) and National Marine Fisheries Service participated in the U.S. Coast Guard’s St. Clair River Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (PREP) oil spill drill.

The drill took place in Michigan on May 25, 2016 in concert with Enbridge, federal, state, and local responders. NOAA staff were positioned in the incident command post and participated in Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) exercises with other co-trustees from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of Michigan.

OR&R's Emergency Response Division provided scientific support to the incident command staff and coordinated overall NOAA support activities, supported environmental unit actions, identified natural resources at risk, and prepared oil fate and trajectory forecasts.

As the NRDA Liaison, OR&R's Assessment and Restoration Division, with assistance from Fisheries staff, gathered and requested data within the incident command post on behalf of the NRDA team for potential future settlement proceedings. The NRDA trustees focused their efforts on identifying ephemeral data needs and developing an approach for the injury assessment. The trustees also provided input to the response through the NRDA liaison as appropriate.
