Ocean Policy Working Group Symposium at Duke University

APRIL 8, 2016--On April 1, Carlie Herring, the NOAA Marine Debris Program Research Coordinator, presented and participated in a panel discussion at the Ocean Policy Working Group Symposium held at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Each year, graduate students at Duke University's Nicolas School of the Environment select an environmental issue as the focus of their symposium. This year, the symposium brought together the marine debris community to discuss current and future marine debris efforts that will help prevent and reduce marine debris on a local and global scale. Carlie's presentation provided an overview of the NOAA Marine Debris Program and illustrated how the program addresses the issue of marine debris through prevention, removal and research efforts. Other marine debris panelists included Nick Mallos from Ocean Conservancy, Jenna Jambeck from the University of Georgia, Lisa Rider, Solid Waste Director from Onslow County, Dan Rittschof from Duke University, Margaret Murphy from EPA's Trash Free Waters, Keith Christman from the American Chemistry Council, and Marcus Eriksen from 5 Gyres.
