NOVEMBER 18, 2016--OR&R Emergency Response Division (ERD) Chief Scott Lundgren and the Assessment and Restoration Division's (ARD) Robb Wright participated in the annual meeting of the Arctic Domain Awareness Center (ADAC) held on November 9-10 in Alexandria, VA, to share information about how NOAA can contribute to Arctic domain awareness.

ADAC is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs, Center of Excellence in Maritime Research hosted by the University of Alaska. ADAC Leadership and Research Principal Investigators reviewed overall Center progress and project milestones and provided focused discussions regarding scientific research and applications.

OR&R’s Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA) plays an important role as the end-user visualization platform for the Arctic Information Fusion Capability (AIFC) – an ADAC project. AIFC combines satellite imagery with available modeling, sensors, web based communications and appropriate social networking feeds to gain domain awareness in support of operational decision making for responders in the field and in command posts.

Also presented at the meeting was another ADAC project regarding oil and ice modeling with OR&R interests. Principal Investigators Dr. Tom Ravens and Dr. Scott Socolofsky presented on work to develop techniques to estimate the spreading of oil that has been released under or among ice as a result of various discharge scenarios. The team is maintaining contact with OR&R to facilitate compatibility of developed algorithms with NOAA’s GNOME oil spill model (General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment).
