OR&R Assists with Training for Washington Coast Tribes

JUNE 17, 2016--This week the OR&R Emergency Response Division assisted with Hazardous Waste Operator ("HAZWOPER") refresher training for Washington state coastal tribes.

Training was provided for spill responders with the Quinault, Quilieute, Makah, and Hoh tribes, as well as U.S. Coast Guard. The training was conducted in collaboration with U.S. Coast Guard District 13, the Washington Department of Ecology, the Marine Spill response Corporation, and Global Diving and Salvage. Annual HAZWOPER refresher training is required for all responders who will work on-scene at oil spills. Members and staff of Washington state coastal tribes will likely be among the first responders to oil spills along the outer Washington coast. The training, which included classroom lectures and field exercises with response equipment, will help the tribes maintain response preparedness, enabling them to better protect their tribal lands and Usual and Accustomed Fishing Areas.
