OR&R Marks Earth Day in Brooklyn with PS 58 Students

APRIL 29, 2016--On April 22, OR&R’s Assessment and Restoration Division staff joined kindergarteners at PS 58 in Brooklyn for a celebration of Earth Day by learning about fish and the ongoing study of the Gowanus Canal including the plan to both clean up and restore habitat for marine life in Brooklyn.

They started out the day talking about visible pollution in the canal and later got to learn about chemicals at the bottom that we can't see and how those chemicals are harming fish. Everyone loved hearing about how pollution ended up in the Gowanus Canal and what it's going to take to get it out. But the chance to get a close-up look at some Brooklyn fish was clearly the most exciting part of the day; there may be a few future fish biologists at PS 58!
