OR&R Participates in 2016 Alaska Marine Science Symposium

JANUARY 29, 2016--At least a dozen OR&R scientists and Scientific Support Coordinators joined NOAA scientists and hundreds of other attendees at the 2016 Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage, on January 25 to 29, 2016.

The symposium featured five keynote speakers, a variety of workshops, over 60 scientific plenary papers and several hundred posters covering all aspects of marine science underway in Alaska’s "three seas". Keynote presentations included one on art in science by an "expeditionary artist" and an Arctic shoreline art exhibit.

The Symposium is unique in that there is only one plenary session with one each day devoted to the Arctic, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of Alaska. Each day begins with oceanography and climatology and closes with new research on higher trophic organisms (birds and mammals) and human dimensions.

A significant highlight was the presentation by Mark Brzezinski, the Executive Director of the U.S. Arctic Executive Steering Committee, who reported on past year progress, including President Obama's historic fall visit to Alaska.
