OR&R Participates in American Academy’s Science during Crisis Workshop

MAY 12, 2017--On April 20-21, OR&R Emergency Response Division Chief Scott Lundgren participated in a Science during Crisis workshop held at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, MA.

This workshop was held as part of the Academy’s wider Public Face of Science initiative.

Workshop participants represented a diverse array of backgrounds and professions, drawing knowledge from disaster and crisis experience at federal science agencies, government affiliated science institutions, environmental journalism, anthropology, local government, and many more. The workshop dialogue will contribute to an American Academy publication on this topic.

Participation allowed sharing of OR&R’s approach and role to science coordination within the response organization in oil and chemical spills and other coastal hazards through the Scientific Support Coordinators, as well the concept of optional Science and Technology Advisor and Advisory Group roles being considered for inclusion in refresh of the National Incident Management System. The importance of incorporation of science into the operational response to oil and chemical spills is the underlying reason for the formation of the SSC over 40 years ago, with a long track record of success.
