OR&R Participates in BP Spill Exercise in Washington State

NOVEMBER 6, 2015--OR&R’S Emergency Response Division participated in a BP worst-case oil spill exercise held this week in Bellingham, Washington.

The drill scenario simulated a tanker allision resulting in the release of 60,000 barrels of Alaska North Slope Crude oil into Samish Bay, with a potential for a nearly 900,000 barrel release. OR&R provided scientific support on oil fate and effects, on-water response countermeasures, and planning for shoreline oiling and cleanup surveys.

Over 200 responders participated in the exercise, including representatives from USCG Sector Puget Sound, Washington State Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Lummi Nation, San Juan County, City of Bellingham, BP and several spill response contractors.
