OR&R Participates in Canada-U.S. Pacific 2016 Oil Spill Workshop and Joint Response Team Meeting

AUGUST 19, 2016—The week of August 15, OR&R’s Emergency Response Division participated in the Canada-U.S. Pacific (CANUSPAC) 2016 Oil Spill Workshop and a Joint Response Team (JRT) meeting held in Victoria, B.C.

The Canadian Coast Guard-United States Coast Guard Joint Marine Pollution Contingency Plan (JCP) is a bi-national treaty between Canada and the U.S. that provides a coordinated system for preparedness and response to oil and hazardous chemical releases in the adjacent waters between the two countries. The CANUSPAC Annex to the JCP covers the areas comprising the international boundary waters of the Salish Sea, including the Strait of Juan de Fuca and seaward approaches, Haro Strait, Boundary Pass, and Strait of Georgia.

The oil spill workshop, hosted by the Canadian Coast Guard Western Region, focused on engaging First Nations and Tribal members in the Southern Salish Sea in discussions about trans-boundary response and preparedness in the region. The workshop also provided an opportunity for a listening session to get input from First Nations and Tribes. Topics discussed included fisheries closures during spills, protection of cultural resources, and wildlife response.
