OR&R Participates in NOAA Exhibit at Seattle Science Expo

AUGUST 27, 2015 -- On August 24, 2015, NOAA representatives from programs in Seattle, Washington, participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) expo for Sandpoint Brettler Family Housing.

This housing, where over 230 children and their families live in transitional and permanent housing, is located on Lake Washington at Magnuson Park next to the NOAA Western Regional Center. The goal of the event was to build interest among the youth in science, math, and technology. The late afternoon and early evening event was held just prior to the start of school to help inspire students. The event was well-attended by a wide range of ages and seemed to be a great success.

In addition to NOAA, other presenters included Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Magnuson Park Community Center, the Seattle Public Library, Pacific Science Center, Technology Access Foundation, University of Washington Engineer Ambassadors, Google, Creative Coding for Kids, and others.

OR&R's exhibit was on marine debris and included samples of plastic objects found on beaches. The children learned how everyday objects such as food packaging, plastic bottles, and cigarette butts can end up on beaches and in the ocean. A point that resonated with lots of the children was that some shorebirds and marine creatures can ingest pieces of plastic, which can kill them.
