OR&R Presentation to Capital City Public Charter School

MARCH 24, 2017--A chemistry teacher at Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, DC contacted the OR&R Emergency Response Division in search of experts to talk to her students about oil spills and methods of clean up.

The class will soon be discussing the history of oil spills, including Deepwater Horizon (2010) and the Exxon Valdez (1989), and looking at different methods of clean up in order to examine costs/benefits of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Of particular focus will be what could happen if there was to be a spill or leak. OR&R’s Ed Levine shared background materials with the teacher including NOAA videos, publications, and related PowerPoint presentations.

A planned presentation on March 28 will address approximately 100 students followed by a Q & A session with a smaller group. The presentation will be on the role of Scientific Support Coordinators and NOAA when there is a spill, oil spill science, response techniques, and how to measure the impact of spills.
