OR&R’s Emergency Response Division Participates in Salish Sea Workshop

The week of January, 5, 2015, OR&R’s Emergency Response Division and NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary staff participated in a Salish Sea Vessel Oil Spill Risk Assessment and Management Workshop in Bellingham, WA.

The technical workshop focused on managing oil spill risk in the geographic region of the Salish Sea, including the northern Puget Sound/Straits of Georgia areas. The purpose of the workshop was to connect assumptions, findings, and recommendations from existing Salish Sea studies that can be used to develop a consolidated list of actionable recommendations and methods to enhance public safety and environmental protection.

Workshop participants included representatives from a broad spectrum of governmental organizations from Washington State, the United States, British Columbia, Canada, Tribal Nations, First Nations, and from the marine industry, environmental advocacy groups, and other interested stakeholders.

Recommendations etc. will be compiled and distributed by the Washington Department of Ecology and Puget Sound Partnership, the workshop co-sponsors.
