OR&R Staff participate in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum “The Expert is In” Series

JUNE 2, 2017--On Wednesday, May 31, OR&R staff met with approximately 40 patrons at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, "Expert Is In" educational series.

Ed Levine (ERD), Kathleen Goggin (ARD), Robin Garcia (HQ) and Daniel Hoffman (HQ Intern) participated in the session, titled: What to Know When an Oil Spill Occurs. Located in the Sant Ocean Hall, the outreach opportunity helped the public understand why oil spills happen, where oil goes, its impacts, and NOAA's role in response. Ed served as the highlighted expert, while Kate, Robin, and Daniel provided support during the event.

"The Expert Is In" series creates an opportunity for a casual meet and greet between experts and Ocean Hall patrons. Set up near the entrance to the Hall, OR&R staff engaged guests with information about oil spills and showed various oil samples, specimens of animals often affected by oil spills, and multiple infographics. The guests were diverse and included school groups, families, and individuals. One participant was a science teacher from China who asked insightful questions about international spills. Patrons were directed to the OR&R website for educational materials and additional info.
