OR&R Staff Present at NOAA’s Environmental Data Management Workshop

JANUARY 6, 2017--The theme for this year’s Environmental Data Management Workshop is "Making NOAA's Data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable for Societal Benefit."

The Purpose of this yearly workshop is to build on past environmental data management work at NOAA by highlighting progress, identifying issues, fostering discussions, and determining where new technologies can be applied. The Keynote Talk will be given by Dr. William Hooke, Associate Executive Director and Senior Policy Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

Several OR&R stall will be presenting at the Workshop in Bethesda, Maryland on January 9 and 10. At the workshop Michele Jacobi will begin her new role as the acting NOS representative to Environmental Data Management Committee. Troy Baker will present on how recent cross-NOAA collaboration helped test and improve animal tagging data standards that are becoming more established on a national and international level. This animal tagging information (e.g., from satellite pop-up archival tags) is used across the agency for various purposes, ranging from pollution injury assessments to detailed life history and population assessments. Rachel Fox will present on how we leverage Geographic Response Plans, which to aid responders in identifying sensitive environmental and socioeconomic sites, within the Environmental Response Mapping Application (ERMA). The project provides easy on-line access to protection strategies for our Federal partners. Ben Shorr's presentation will focus on management of the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment Environmental Data. He will highlight the DIVER data warehouse and query application and the challenges/ solutions that our office encountered while dealing with the unprecedented magnitude and complexity of these data sets.
