OR&R Staff Spotlight: LT Greg Schweitzer

JULY 24, 2015--LT Greg Schweitzer developed his NOAA career skills early in life by doodling weather maps, beginning in kindergarten and continuing through high school as a volunteer spot reporter for the National Weather Service.

Beyond that, his fascination with weather and the environment led to a career as an Air Force meteorologist. While in the Air Force, Greg earned undergraduate degrees in meteorology and management, ultimately leading to a commission as an Air Force Weather Officer.

Like so many other great discoveries, his NOAA career began with a late night Google search. Greg knew almost immediately after stumbling upon the NOAA Corps Officer website that he wanted to be on that team.

Similar to most NOAA Corps Officers, Greg’s eight years with NOAA have been quite diverse. His time with NOAA has included two ship assignments, a tour with the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Protected Resources Division, a staff job in Silver Spring, and a graduate degree in Environmental Management along the way.

Those past assignments were crucial in preparing Greg for the myriad of issues he would eventually deal with in his current position as a NOAA Scientific Support Coordinator (SSC) in the Great Lakes and Midwest Region with OR&R.

NOAA SSCs are in some ways like Swiss Army knives, but unlike most Swiss Army knives, the tools a NOAA SSC wields must stay sharp and well-used. Of those tools, the one Greg feels most fortunate to have is the world-class staff and scientists at OR&R and throughout NOAA that help make his job look easy.
