OR&R Supports “Bootcamp” for Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Network

MAY 5, 2017--Twelve NMFS Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Network coordinators went through oil spill “bootcamp” to train for the Deputy Wildlife Branch Director position.

Sarah Wilkin, Mike Ziccardi, DVM and Teri Rowles from the Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Network, and John Tarpley (OR&R’s Emergency Response Division), conducted the two-day course and tabletop exercise on April 25-26 at UC Davis, CA. A comprehensive set of topics were covered including: training and preparation, incident notification, duty position roles and responsibilities, Wildlife Branch structure, document preparation, special liaison roles during response, legal issues and natural resource damage assessment. John presented information on the National Response System, Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, Incident Command System, NOAA's role in spill response, the SSC, Environmental Unit, and supported the table-top exercise. Excellent participation and discussion occurred, bringing in spill experiences from recent years (DWH, Texas City Y, Tug Nalani, Refugio, and others). This training was another layer of on-going preparedness that the NMFS Protected Resources staff are continuing to undertake to ensure that they are ready to respond to and support the next oil spill or disaster incident.
