OR&R Training in Bahrain

Steve Lehmann, one of the OR&R Scientific Support Coordinators, will be conducting training and participating in an oil spill workshop and table top exercise with the U.S. Navy in Bahrain from April 14-17, 2014.

Invited to the workshop and exercise are nations from around the Arabian/Persian Gulf and Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment member states and often include Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and others.

The relationship between NOAA OR&R and the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet began over a decade ago when NOAA participated, in kingdom, on the development of an oil spill contingency plan for U.S. on-water assets in the Northern Arabian Gulf. Since that time, NOAA has been listed as the U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage's technical adviser for oil spills in the region, participating regularly in this annual event in Bahrain and responding to several major oil spills.

Mr. Lehmann will be teaching a half-day oil spill response course to U.S. Navy officers assigned the duty of marine pollution response. NOAA presentations will also include science support during a spill and case studies of past experiences. After a decade of workshops, exercises, and training with response organizations in the Arabian/Persian Gulf, NOAA has become a known entity in the region with regard to marine emergency response.
