MARCH 10, 2017--RESCON 2017 (“Resilience Conference”), held March 7-9 in New Orleans, LA, started off with a keynote address by the governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards.

Following his address the annual Impact awards were handed out and former Secretary of Commerce Penny Priztker was one of the distinguished awardees; The Secretary’s was presented in absentia but the award contingent also included two U.S. mayors (Dawn Zimmer of Hoboken, NJ, and Mitch Landrieu or New Orleans). Mayor Landrieu thanked the delegates for attending and completed the plenary on the first day by making remarks that highlighted the need for greater resilience in planning and recovery.

Other U.S. Department of Commerce employees in attendance included a presenter from NIST, a delegate from EDA, and two from NOAA. One of those NOAA employees was on the panel discussion entitled “Harnessing the Data Revolution” along with a close DoC cousin of NOAA, Dr. James Done of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (operated by the National Science Foundation).
