Restoring Fish Habitat in the Raritan Watershed

MAY 6, 2016--NOAA and co-trustees have released, for public comment, a Draft Restoration Plan and Environmental Assessment that focuses on removal of the Weston Mill Dam, located on the Millstone River, and analyzing and designing improved fish passage at the Island Farm Weir on the Raritan River.

These projects would compensate the public for injuries to natural resources in the river associated with hazardous waste releases from the American Cyanamid Superfund Site located in Bridgewater Township, NJ. Removal of the Weston Mill Dam would restore stream channel bathymetry and hydrology, improve water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife, and restore passage for migratory fish. The public comment period on this plan will end on June 10, 2016. For more information, contact Reyhan.Mehran@noaa.gov. Water quality and habitat improvements including restoration of migratory fish passage to historic spawning grounds make removal of the Weston Mill Dam one of the highest priority dam removal projects in New Jersey. (NOAA)
