Risk Communication Training Held at the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center

DECEMBER 4, 2015--On November 17, 2015, NOAA's Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center (DRC) hosted the second of three regional risk communication workshops.

The first workshop was held in Galveston, Texas, in October 2015. During each workshop, students learned about topics such as:

  • risk;
  • perception of the federal, state, and local government before, during, and after disasters;
  • effective communication;
  • how to answer tough questions; and
  • building trust and credibility.

Participants represented NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration, Fisheries, Restoration Center, Office for Coastal Management, and National Weather Service; the U.S. Coast Guard, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant, Ocean Conservancy, and the American Shrimp Processors Association.

The workshop on risk and crisis communications was developed and led by Ann Hayward Walker, of SEA Consulting Group.
