SCAT Training at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Florida

NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration Emergency Response Division held a three-day Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) training class at the NOVA Southeast Oceanographic Institute at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park on June 10-12, 2014.

30 students from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Florida's Department of Environmental Protection, and NOAA participated. The training consists of classroom and field elements that prepare graduates to be part of SCAT teams during an oil spill response. These teams conduct field assessments, develop cleanup recommendations and cleanup endpoints, and monitor operations during response to ensure the most effective response techniques are properly applied and that natural and protected resources are considered and protected during cleanup operations.
