Study Focused on Impacts of Debris Generated by 2011 Japan Tsunami

MARCH 4, 2016--The week of February 22, the NOAA Marine Debris Program's Director participated in a North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) meeting in Japan.

The Government of Japan is sponsoring a three-year project to study the impacts of the debris generated by the 2011 tsunami on the shores of the U.S. and Canada. Representatives from the Governments of Japan, Canada, and the United States co-chair the project.

This is the end of the second year of the study and the project co-chairs met to review progress and set the priorities for next year. The project focuses on modeling, surveillance and monitoring and the risk of invasive species. The co-chairs traveled to the Tohoku region of Japan to see the devastation of the tsunami firsthand.
