Sustainable Raritan Conference in New Brunswick, NJ

JUNE 16, 2017--The Sustainable Raritan Initiative was inaugurated in 2009. Planning and environmental programs at Rutgers University work together with stakeholders to build momentum toward restoring the Raritan River, its tributaries and estuary. NOAA's Damage Assessment, Remediation and Restoration Program (DARRP) has been working to protect and restore trustee resources in the Raritan River watershed well before the formation of the Initiative and made us a likely partner. Currently we are actively pursuing natural resource damage assessment cases at American Cyanamid, Cornell Dubilier, and Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Sites in the watershed.

On June 9, the Initiative held its 9th Sustainable Raritan Conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey. About 150 attendees brought together scientists, environmentalists, government agencies, consultants, planners, and economists to talk about the State of the Raritan. The lunch time keynote speaker was from the William Penn Foundation who spoke about the foundations involvement in the Delaware River Watershed Initiative and their strategies for watershed protection and restoration. Members of NOAA's Assessment and Restoration Division and NOAA's Restoration Centers were in attendance.
