“Taking the Helm: Chairing the Arctic Council” at CHOW

JUNE 12, 2015--Every year Capitol Hill Oceans Week (CHOW) spurs discussion of the top issues facing our oceans today. This year’s event included key leaders in the ocean community including members of congress, nongovernmental organizations, NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, and other government officials.

The Arctic, energy development, and budget topics were at the forefront of panel discussions and questions from the audience. Of particular interest to OR&R, “Taking the Helm: Chairing the Arctic Council” included a significant discussion of Arctic Council working groups and planning and preparedness for Arctic oil spills. During the panel, Admiral Papp emphasized the need for exercises and research for spill response. He also emphasized the likelihood of a spill from a vessel in the Arctic.

NOAA is a sponsor of the event. A full agenda including videos are available here.
