“Taking the Pulse of the Planet” Award

On March 22, NOAA awarded the “Taking the Pulse of the Planet” to eighth-grader, Julius Ball-Heldman, at the District of Columbia Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Fair.

Julius' environmental science and management project, "Does Color (of a recycling bin) Affect Recycling?” takes a practical approach to studying how color factors into the preferences of his schoolmates. Julius concluded that students recycled more if the bins were yellow.

The award recognizes outstanding projects in ocean, coastal, Great Lakes, weather, and climate sciences. NOAA grants the award to the student whose research emphasizes NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment and conserve natural resources. With over 150 inspiring projects to review Saturday, the judges had their work cut out for them.
