Talking Marine Debris with Packaging Industry Professionals

APRIL 3,2015--On April 1, 2015, Marine Debris Program staff presented to members of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), an organization for networking and education within the packaging industry.

Sherry Lippiatt's presentation provided a broad overview of the issue and effects of marine debris, current research into the relative impacts of different polymer types, and approaches to prevention. Participants included supply chain sustainability experts, packaging engineers, and plastics manufacturers, some of whom were totally new to the issue. A lively discussion focused on information needs for including marine debris, not only landfills, as an additional end-of-life consideration in decision making.
