Telling Restoration Success Stories from U.S. Military Sites

OR&R Assessment and Restoration Division's Alyce Fritz was invited to participate in the Department of Defense, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and State Tier 3 Meeting held at EPA Headquarter offices in Arlington, Virginia, the week of August 20, 2014.

The meeting involved program managers from EPA, all the Department of Defense services, and state representatives from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, who were reporting on the status of cleanups at federal facilities. Fritz discussed collaborative interagency efforts to promote restoration success stories at Defense sites which are also Superfund sites.

During her session on “Wetland and Waterway Restoration Efforts as Part of CERCLA Response Actions,” she introduced the OR&R blog post, “On the Chesapeake Bay, Overcoming the Unique Challenges of Bringing Restoration to Polluted Military Sites” as it went live. She engaged all the attendees in a lively discussion of publicizing the successful interagency collaboration at numerous federal facilities to achieve integrated remediation and restoration of habitat, as well as climate resiliency for Chesapeake Bay and other regions.

The idea of using the OR&R blog to share success stories of enhancing recovery and restoring habitat with input from all partners generated great enthusiasm and several ideas for future posts from both Department of Defense and state managers. The next two stories planned are the cleanup and restoration stories at Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Naval Surface Warefare Center (Indian Head) in Maryland. Stay tuned for more!
