Weston Mill Dam in New Jersey to be Removed this Summer

MAY 19, 2017--The week of May 15, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection issued permits for removal of a low head dam located near the confluence of the Millstone and Raritan Rivers.

Removal of the Weston Mill Dam is part of the settlement negotiated to compensate for potential injuries to fish and other in-river trust resources from long-term hazardous substance releases related to the American Cyanamid Superfund Site in Bridgewater, NJ. The facility was used for manufacturing of chemicals, dyes, and pharmaceuticals and for coal tar distillation beginning in the early 1900s. The Weston Mill Dam removal is expected to return the flow of the river closer to its natural state, restore passage for migratory fish, and improve water quality and habitat without negative impacts to endangered species or cultural, sociological, or archaeological resources.
