Determined to address marine debris, the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs convened the symposium to discuss marine debris in Indonesia, and means to reduce it. Sessions on Research and International Cooperation, Social Issues and Empowerment, and Technology and Innovation explored solutions to the marine debris problem in Indonesia, and how to best implement them. The symposium, as well as lectures provided by Nir at the University of Hasanuddin and at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture, provided opportunities for discussion and meetings with representatives of government agencies, NGO, and academia, who are energized to quickly implement measures to improve waste management and marine debris handling in the country.
