Director of NOAA Marine Debris Program Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Save Our Seas 2.0 Amendments Act

APRIL 3, 2023 — On Thursday, March 23, the Committee on Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries held a hearing on H.R. 886 (the “Save Our Seas 2.0 Amendments Act”) and three other bills.

Nancy Wallace, director of the NOAA Marine Debris Program, within the Office of Response and Restoration, served as a witness. On behalf of NOAA, she provided written and oral testimony and answered questions from members of Congress, including Rep. Magaziner (RI-02), Rep. Luna (FL-13), and Rep. Peltola (AK-AL).

The Save Our Seas 2.0 Amendments Act would provide technical and administrative corrections to the operation of the Marine Debris Foundation and enable NOAA to provide additional support to the Foundation. The Amendments Act would also amend the Marine Debris Act to provide more flexibility for NOAA to enter into different types of agreements and to allow a discretionary cost-share waiver for grants to address severe marine debris events.
