Ecosystem Services Analysis and Urban Estuary Restoration

AUGUST 3, 2017--On July 25, OR&R's Assessment and Restoration Division attended an ecosystem services workshop in NYC.  The focus of the workshop was to begin a one-year project on the role of ecosystem services valuation in urban estuary restoration with an eye towards attracting more funding and therefore more restoration to the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. This effort is sponsored by the Hudson River Foundation. Existing information, including case studies, will be used to assess barriers to urban estuary restoration and to investigate the effects of including explicit valuation of ecosystem services in the decision process. Of particular interest is the possibility that valuation might enhance the likelihood of funding projects in a urban setting rather than more rural areas. This effort could also inform future Hudson River Foundation and NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program research and programs. Meeting participants included non-governmental organizations, consultants and local, state and federal agencies representing regulators, economists, scientists and restoration practitioners.
