Lighthouse Lofoten Conference in Svolvaer, Norway

NOVEMBER 4, 2019 — On October 17-18, the Marine Debris Program (MDP) participated and presented at the Lighthouse Lofoten conference in Svolvaer, Norway.

The Norwegian Centre for Oil Spill Preparedness and Marine Environment (MARINENVIRON), along with the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries and Clean Nordic Oceans, hosted the conference. The focus of the two-day event was to share strategies on the prevention and the cleanup of marine litter. MDP was invited to share successful cleanup collaborations and strategies, with a focus on coastal cleanups. Deputy Chief, MaryLee Haughwout, represented MDP and presented on removal and cleanup projects, as well as engagement strategies, data collection, and monitoring. Representatives from many organizations in Europe were present, as well as from the government of Canada, the UN Environment, and many others.
